‘New ‘phonics’ tests are being introduced to year one primary children next summer (2012). Trials have been completed this year. The tests aim to identify children who may have reading difficulties in order that they may get extra reading help.’

Phonics is the method of teaching children to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters (strings). The activities in ‘Sounds and Symbols’ promote the skills necessary for the successful learning of letter and string sounds.
